We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate with a strong interest in molecular biology and host-pathogen interactions. In the past few years, the HIV Cure Research Center together with the Center for Medical Genetics pioneered lncRNA discovery in the context of HIV and performed several screening approaches to systematically map and identify HIV-linked lncRNAs. The successful candidate will be focused on the functional validation and characterization of the lncRNA hits to further prioritize lead targets that contribute to an HIV biomarker or new therapy. We offer a 4 year PhD contract with an aimed start date September/October 1st 2019 but require application for personal funding (FWO). Research Context Ghent University is a top 100 university and one of the major universities in Belgium. Our 11 faculties offer a wide range of courses and conduct in-depth research within a wide range of scientific domains. The HIV Cure Research Center (HCRC) is situated at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and is located at the Ghent University Hospital Campus. The HCRC is divided into three research units: the Translational virological unit, the Translational immunological unit and the Basic HIV research unit. There is close collaboration between these units weekly group meetings. You will be integrated into the basic HIV research unit and closely collaborate with the Pieter Mestdagh lab at the Center for Medical Genetics Ghent. The HCRC group consists of +/- 20 researchers that include PhD students, lab technicians, postdoc’s and study nurses.
Profile of the candidate
- The candidate has proficiency in spoken and written English.
- The candidate shows independence in designing, performing and supervising his/her experiments.
- Experience with one or more of the following techniques is an advantage: cell-culture & cell-isolation (cell lines, primary cells), cloning (bacterial work), knockdown via transfection/lentivial transduction, qPCR, flow cytometry, RNA-pulldown or CRISPR-based technology (Cas9, dCas9).
- The candidate must show passion for science and willingness to participate to work as part of a team. Hence, excellent communication skills are essential to succeed in this position.
